ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Bachelor Degree: Oakland University, Professional Certificate: Stella Adler Studio of Acting
Overview:
Hello! My name is Sophia Cannella and I am a music and theatre educator located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. A little about me, I am a voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, and acting teacher. I have over 5 years of experience teaching privately and teaching large classes, both online and in person. I have been trained as a singer since age 8, and have played instruments since I was 9. I am graduating in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre Performance from Oakland University. Outside of work and school, I love to relax and cuddle with my kitten, Charlie. I also enjoy reading, writing, watching TV and movies, and crocheting.
EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for a year, as a teacher in person and online privately, at Axis Music Academy, and through Ignite! the Sparks!. I have taught ages 5-42, and love every age for voice, piano, guitar, and ukulele. I can teach absolute beginners to advanced vocalists, and beginner to intermediate piano, ukulele, and guitar. I specialize in musical theatre technique, acting technique, vocal technique and conditioning, sight singing, and music theory. As a student myself, I know how hard it can be to learn new things, and how important it is to have a kind, knowledgable and adaptable teacher, and I feel I offer a teaching perspective with all of those things!

METHODS USED
For voice, I tend to start with vocal conditioning, breath work, and easy pop, Disney, and musical theatre repertoire. For piano, I love using Alfred's Basic Piano Library to start, but I am flexible with books and resources to meet the student's needs. For ukulele, I start with learning basic chords and learning to play easy songs For guitar, I follow the Guitar for Kids book to learn basic chords and notes, then move towards sight playing, and playing songs with different strumming patterns.

LESSON STYLE

I am all for fostering the student's interests and passion for music, and pushing them to reach for the stars. I work with the student's capabilities and am flexible to move at their speed, while pushing them to learn more and more as we go along. I keep students busy with fresh material and working on skills along with songs. I am big with setting monthly goals with my students, and adapting them with things that come up in student's lives such as concerts, shows, recitals, classes, etc. I want to inspire my students with the love for music that I have!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
