Overview:
I am a pianist with 10 years of teaching experience who is committed to the individual and unique needs of each student. I attended Indiana University where I got a Bachelor of Music in piano performance, and Manhattan School of Music where I got a Master of Music in piano performance. I've performed internationally in places like South Africa and Mexico, and all around the United States and northeast region. I've released two CDs, and I co-founded an arts organization that brings scientists and musicians together in collaboration.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for about 10 years, both privately and in schools. When I was at Indiana University, I tutored fellow music students who wanted to study piano, and I also began teaching privately. Since then, I have adjunct faculty at Seton Hall University, and I have taught privately. My students have ranged in age from 5 through adult, and I've taught all levels of experience. I've prepped students for auditions, entrance to music schools, college-level, and I've taught complete beginners. Every student is so different, in both their needs and their interests, and it's very important to me to tailor lessons for the individual. I make a point of listening carefully, so that I can inspire each student in the way that they need.
METHODS USED
For all of my students, both children and adults, I incorporate theory, technique, ear training, and musicality into the lessons. It's very important to me that all aspects of music be learned in an ongoing and cohesive way. I firmly believe that a strong understanding of these different elements will inform every other aspect, and make for a more grounded and satisfied student. For adults, lesson plans vary quite a bit, depending on the level of the adult and their interests. I will pick music together with the student to make sure it is repertoire that inspires and interests them. For children, I typically start with the Alfred series. All students are invited to perform at studio recitals at my home studio. Other performing and competing opportunities are discussed on an ongoing basis.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style, above all, is to create a space for each individual student where they feel safe. I want my students to be able to express their frustrations, or express what they need me to change in my teaching style, or be able to experiment and have fun! In that vein, my studio is also a safe place for ALL, including those who identify as LGBTQIA, people who are disabled, or those of any faith or immigrant status. Any and all students are welcome. I'm interested in developing "whole" musicians, who are curious and grounded in all aspects of the understanding of music. That said, I will find ways to make sure each student is inspired. Above all, I will work to share my love of music with my students, and we will find ways for each student to express their own love of music.
