Sophia is classically trained vocalist who studied Music Therapy at Montclair State University. She has 6+ years of professional performance experience, which includes Spirit Entertainment Cruises and appearances at Carnegie Hall and various performances with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Sophia's teaching philosophy and style focuses on vocal health and awareness, as well as building confidence in a comfortable and affordable environment. Located in Bloomfield, NJ
EXPERIENCE
My love of teaching became stronger than ever after I recovered from a vocal disorder that changed my life. Everything I learned from that experience encouraged me to spread awarness of vocal health. I love teaching people new things especially those interested in music. Sharing what I know from life experiences and music therapy hands on observations is not only rewarding but continues to help me to grow. As for teaching experience, I have given lessons to non-music majors while in school and also taught music while studying abroad in Jamaica..
METHODS USED
As a singer who has already experienced some of the traumatic effects of misuse and overuse of singing, I believe that health comes first. Anyone can learn to sing but there are so many significant factors that most teachers forget to include in their training. I believe that any one can have or learn to have talent, but the singer who has the awarness and understanding of taking care of that talent will benefit more than they can imagine. I have experience with speech and voice therapy, as well as training in voice pedagogy, Alexander's Technique, and Body Mapping which I feel is important to include when teaching voice. Also, I believe it is up to the student or the student's parent(s) if lesson plans should be actively persued, and if they are then each student would be analyzed and have a unique plan that includes a combination of my experiences and training.
LESSON STYLE
Going from singing for fun, to performing professionally, to music therapy has only intensified my passion for helping others. Teaching others is such a unique experience, especially when when it involves music. I believe teaching is at its best when the teacher her/himself discovers something new as well. I always include a strong understanding of vocal padagogy; vocal health; piano pedagogy; Classical, pop, musical theatre; stage performance; basic music theory and solfedge. Teaching in a comfortable setting is very important to me as well.
