Master Degree: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Bachelor Degree: University of Colorado at Boulder
I am a flutist and music teacher who recently moved to western Washington. I leads masterclasses, adjudicates competitions and auditions, and perform throughout the community, and have played Flute and Piccolo with the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra since 2019. I earned my Master of Music degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Bachelor of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Additionally, I earned a Certificate in Arts Management from the University of California, Irvine. I have premiered dozens of new works ranging from guided group improvisation to solo flute to flute and electronics; these premieres have taken me across the country with special performances in New York City, Illinois, and Colorado. My orchestral and chamber music experience includes performances in New York City, Chicago and Italy, where she has often been Principal Flute or featured soloist.
I began teaching as a supervised and mentored Guided Practice Teacher, helping students learn to practice and become their own teacher. After a few years of that, I was deemed "Ready To Teach" by my supervisors and mentors. Today, my students have excelled in their Flute Performance degrees at top universities, placed in regional and national competitions and auditions, and developed a life-long love of music. Having studied with some of the world's best flutists and teachers, I have the tips, tricks, and tactics to make sure you learn quickly and properly, while still having fun!
I use a variety of method books, technique exercises, and etudes to teach students of all ages and abilities. Rather than choosing one method, I personalize each curriculum and lesson plan to suit your ability, interest, and goals. In choosing repertoire, I make a point to include newly composed works as well as pieces from the standard repertoire across every musical era so you get a wide range of musical experiences. Call and response and playing together features a lot in my teaching as well, so that you can mirror my playing and learn faster!
My teaching style revolves around the beauty that we can create with music; ultimately, this is art! I especially focus on beautiful tone and musicality, with attention given to mindfulness and concentration. Each lesson includes technical work and precision, as well as more exciting musical work - I cater to your goals, needs and preferences! I find it really important to model proper playing and will often give an example or play along with you so you can match my style, posture, and technique.
