Bachelors Degree- Juan N Corpas (Bogota, Colombia) Masters Degree- University of New Orleans
2013 University of New Orleans merit scholarship.
Music has been my life passion, since I was 10 years old. At 15 I enter the Juan N Copras Consevatory to persue classical guitar performance. In 2010 I was invited to perform in Barichara Music Festival wich has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my carrer so far, because I was exposed to great performers and I enjoyed playing for big audiences. I was then invited to perform and study in Annapolis for 3 months by the founder of the Baricahra Music Festical, Jairo Delgado. In 2012 I moved to New Orlenas to learn and play jazz music, and be a part of the rich musical atmosphere and heritage the city has to offer. I enrolled in the University of New Orleans and graduated with a jazz masters in the fall of 2015. I currently play in the city and have had the chance to perform in Yuki, La 49 and the UNO Sandbar.
I started teaching in new Orleans 2 years ago. My first experience was in Guitar Center Studio for one year and then in LaFargue Pianos music shop for another year. I have had students of differet ages and musical preferances and backgounds. Each person has an individual process with music and its my job to help them in that process. I like to set clear goals and expectations, where the student has a clear idea what to do in order to improve or conquer a specific challenge. Denpending on these goals or expetations the process of each student will be unique. Its most important above all for the students to feel they are developing their potential and they fell encouranged and motivated in their learning process.
I like to focus my lessons based on the needs of the student. For beginener students (younger) I like to start out by playing and teaching them simple songs and melodies that will be easy to remeber and that will start to develop the fundamental knowledge of the guitar. From this point it will easier to learn more songs, creating a repetoire, and gradually move to more complicated music. For older or intermediate students I like to focus on music that they are persoanlly interested in and build the lessons from there. Learning songs that they like will fuel their interest, keeping them motivated and enyoing the lessons. In addition to this I work with exercises to develop a good technique to facilitate their playing and be able to play more challenging songs. For more advanced students I like to work scales, arpeggios and chord forms. This will be done to further the knowladge of the instrument and practice improvisations methods, to be able to practice soloing and improvising
It is very important for me to get to know my students interest and musical inclinations.I design my lessons based on their needs and their goals. I like to make sure that they are building a strong foundation as well as enjoying the process of learning. I believe in creating a clear path or setting a clear process wich will help the student achieve a specific goal. The more the student conquers small but important goals, the more he will improve and be motivated to do so. This will make him appreciate his work and his own personal process in music.
