Diamond Bar High School Thundering Herd Marching Band
All State Audition
I am a passionate and motivated instructor who works with students of all ages. I have performed at Carnegie Hall in flute and competed in the competitive divisions of marching band ranking second place in the Arcadia Division. Setting the pace for succeeding years, that band has now ranked first place in that competition numerous times. I have always had an interest in classical music since I did ballet. Piano is my first instrument and I recommend it for all as it encompasses the ability to read and play any note and the easiest to hear pitch wise. I have referrals for clarinet instructors, as I have tried my hand at oboe :)
My teaching experience is based on my own lessons with my piano and flute teachers. I am lucky to have studied under some fantastic professors of music from cal state long beach. I encourage students to try new instruments and motivate them to learn their favorite pop songs. My time in marching band throughout high school was a great relief from schoolwork for me. I've worked with kids from k-8th grade, in tutoring and I find best after 4th grade for music lessons. I encourage a regular practice schedule for all students but especially younger ones.
For beginning students I start with Hal Leonard's book then we progress to sheet music and classical pieces. In my beginning classes a lot of studying how to read music is helpful and to be able to hear it will take some learning as well. For my intermediate students, we will see what part of their music skill is weakest and strength that component, from rhythm to posture, and making sure they are learning new skills. For more advanced students we will cover scales, technique, muscality. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
We set realistic goals and make music fun for all! it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I prefer a calm teaching style and want my classes to be warm and welcoming to all. Music should be enjoyable first and foremost.
