BA, University of California Santa Cruz, Psychology Minor; Electronic Music
I'm a compassionate and enthusiastic instructor who has a love for creating & listening to a diverse collection of music and passing this love of music onto my students. Since 2002, I've taken piano, vocal, songwriting & music theory lessons at Twin Town Guitars and in my youth performed in youth music camps, jazz bands at St. Louis Park Senior High and various piano recitals. In 2018, I graduated from University of California, Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Electronic Music. During my time in college I've had the incredible opportunity of performing at Silo's in Napa, the Empress Theater in Vallejo, Prince's venue First Avenue & 7th Street entry in Minnesota as well as Unscruz Music Festival and Don Quixote's in Santa Cruz. I've performed Classical, Jazz, Pop, Classic Rock, Blues, Contemporary, Electronica and Avant-garde music live.
I began teaching private lessons a year ago and have been consistently teaching private lessons at students' homes and in my home studio since then. I've discovered that focusing on students' own interests and love for music generates fun, engaging and rewarding lessons for them. Repetition and a consistent practice schedule is easier for students to continue when lessons are focused on developing the aspects of music that they love, or building skills that take them closer to their interests. If a student is losing interest in learning I would brainstorm and adapt my teaching style to be more relatable to their learning style. I encourage my students to use skills they learn in our lessons to compose & produce original music, perform with friends, perform in local music recitals & concerts and simply have fun with what they've learned! I've taught students from 6 years of age to adults and believe music is a joy deserving for people of any race, gender and age!
For children just beginning their instrument, I teach finger placement and note location on the piano by using a color coding system to use in learning a song from John Thompson's Easy Piano Course. From there i introduce songs that interest them and develop sheet music comprehension, rhythm, finger technique and harmony development at a pace comfortable for your child. For older students, I ask them what their interests in music are. From there, we develop skills & learn songs that bring them joy, or bring them closer to enjoying playing music.
I believe that encouragement, practical positivity, different learning styles and realistic short term & long term challenges can aid in you or your child's musical success. I emphasize developing positive & down to earth relationships with my students so that they feel like they can be themselves and learn in a safe environment. Developing relationships also aids in understanding what you or your child's learning style is and in creating realistic short term and long term goals & lesson plans. All in all, my teaching style is rooted in basic human respect, kindness, accountability and teaching the focus building, healing & energizing nature music has.
