I LOVE teaching and sharing the richness of our noble instrument. I have several decades of professional orchestral experience and private studies in music composition and performance practice. I am currently principal bass in a local orchestra and ensemble coordinator for a chamber orchestra. Injury prevention is a key component to my teaching. In the case of younger students, I encourage the parents to become involved. My focus is on the STUDENT - goals, interests, and desired outcomes.
Decades of symphonic and chamber music experience and a love of the noble double bass! Watching a student's progress over time is one of my greatest rewards. My students are encouraged to communicate openly - their interests, goals, desires, and even their dislikes. Prior students have gone on to play professionally or remain involved in some form of music.
For young beginners, I assess the best approach - be it a particular method book or writing out my own studies geared toward the individual. From the first lesson, proper bow technique is emphasized, helping the student get a pleasing sound in the first lesson. For older students (teens and up), I teach to their goals and interests, welcoming and encouraging their input. Communication is vital. I also give listening assignments to help introduce students to varied repertoire - orchestral, chamber, and even vocal.
Lessons, while involving discipline and work, should be fun! My teaching is a continuing dialogue with my students and (in the case of younger students) their parents. I adhere to a traditional technique and tailor my teaching to the individual student.
