I Have been playing the guitar for 15 years and have been teaching for 10 years. From 2005 - 2008 I studied Guitar Performance and Music Theory at The Musicians Institute of Hollywood, CA. Over the years I have played and recorded with several bands including Slow Motion Rider, Ecstatic Union, Micah Brown Band and other small projects. In addition to playing with others, I have composed and recorded several of my own songs, playing all the instruments needed (Guitars, Bass, Drums, Vocals, Organ, Piano, Banjo, Ukulele, Hamonica, Auto Harp, other Percusssion, ect...). I love many different styles of music especially Blues and early Rock n Roll. It is my hope to be a helpful and nourishing guide to those wanting to discover the magic of music
I started giving guitar lessons before I left to go to music school and continued to do so while I was in school and afterwards as well. It's always been for the love of sharing music with others and now I'm feeling called to do it full time. I have taught students from the age of 5 to folks in Their 50's. It's never too late to start learning an instrument. In my experience, most students want to start off learning how to play their favorite guitar solo's but I always encourage them to learn and become familiar with the fundamentals first. This will make them a better musician which always leads to more fun.
First off, I find out what inspired the student to want to play music and I'll get a feel for the type of music that they're interested in. Then I will create a custom lesson plan for that student. There is so much to discover about music, so I encourage setting small goals each lesson. I like to teach my students songs that present many different melodic scenarios and help them develop their ear so that can start to recognize all types of chord progressions, melodies and rhythmic patterns. This enables the students to make more progress during their own practice time.
As a musician, it is very important to understand the perspective of all instruments and how they work together. The better that one understands this connection, the more profound their contribution will be when playing with others. As a teacher, my goal is to assist each student in finding their own creative voice and guide them through the process of learning to express themselves through music. In addition to learning the guitar, I encourage my students to listen carefully and take notice to all the accompanying instruments in the music that they enjoy listening to. This will result in a more well rounded player and more complementary ideas.
