Overview:
My interest in a variety of musical styles has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of great musicians from different backgrounds. It has also opened my eyes to a variety of ways of thinking about music. I received a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from Bowling Green State University in 2012. I've performed recently with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra as a section percussionist, and I frequently play drum set with a band that plays for corporate events, private parties, and concert series. I have a strong interest in rock and metal, and I am a member of Patchwork, a saxophone/drum set duo that collaborates with composers to create new music.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching privately since 2010, when I accepted a position as a teaching assistant at Bowling Green State University. My responsibilities included teaching private lessons to undergraduate percussion majors and coaching percussion ensembles. I also began teaching students from middle school through high school age around the same time, and my students have since included those of adult age. I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels of experience, as they all bring something unique to their lessons and allow me to bring out aspects of my personality that will engage them best. I encourage everyone I work with to share what they're most interested in with me so that I can best help them reach their musical goals.
METHODS USED
I use a variety of method books for drum set, mallet percussion, and snare drum, depending on the student's level and their area of interest. I also share exercises and approaches that I have picked up over the years from teachers and other sources, and I often create exercises on the spot to address the student's unique needs. One of the primary issues that I think is important to address is developing an efficient and effective practice method. A good practice method is a tool that the student can apply to anything they're interested in, and since practicing well helps the student improve faster, it also encourages them and allows them to have more fun.
LESSON STYLE
It's important to me that private lessons incorporate dialogue as much as possible. A student's feedback and questions are invaluable when deciding how to proceed. Rather than handing the student new materials from week to week without regard for their personal needs, I prefer to really dig in and figure out what their specific barriers to improvement are. I believe that the best way to do that is open communication, and I try to encourage that by conveying my excitement for music and learning at every lesson.

Stephen has been really great with Jeremiah and my grandson is really excited to work with him. I would highly recommend him for other friends.
