I'm a motivated instructor who wants to keep the arts alive by feeding our youth. Music is the greatest language to learn and I strive to give kids a genuinely fun approach to learning music. I'm from New Orleans, La. so playing in the local brass bands truly sparked my interest in the limitless heights the trumpet could take me. I've traveled all over the country to about 30-35 states playing my horn as lead/principle player in various marching, concert, jazz and corporate bands. I'm also a session musician and have played live horns on studio recorded records with artists from around the world.
My teaching experience started in college when I became a Head Section Leader at Norfolk State University. I taught privately while earning my degree. I've also taught many bands as Director of Upper Brass from Southwest DeKalb to Asst. Band Director at Edna Karr High School in New Orleans) and I had the great task of not only starting a band from scratch but having the ONLY elementary school band in Cobb County in 2017-18. Teaching elementary band taught me how to have fun being creative with children who are so eager to learn about music!
For beginner students, I take an individual approach because I've learned that there's no one way to teach multiple students. Each child is different so with careful evaluation of their specific needs and abilities, I decide on which approach would best fit that student. I love to start out by working on posture and embouchure. Those 2 are very important because younger children tend to be a little distracted in those areas. Breathing will be high on the beginners' priority list as well. I focus on those 3 for a good bit of the beginning process to build strong muscle memory for the students.
Setting realistic goals is the best way to approach teaching private lessons. Being that I will only see a student, on average once a week, I tend to be honest and realistic about expectations and goals. I like set goals that are somewhat challenging but very attainable through motivation and fun. Those moments of excitement when a student finally achieves a task that I may have given them brings so much joy to my heart! That motivation not only fuels me, but it also fuels the student to strive for higher goals!
