I’ve taught students of all ages and various skill levels for almost 20yrs. It’s great to pass along experience and perspective to students helping them grow in their abilities to play and appreciate music. I'm kind of a hybrid musician that has had opportunities to work with many professional musicians and also to study with several great musicians in their own right. I’ve had great tremendous opportunities to play all over the US and also in South America. In all my 35 yrs of playing music, I’m glad to be able to say that you’re never too old or experienced to learn new things. Music is so dynamic and such a powerful method of expression.
I’ve taught private lessons at music stores as well as at my home studio for the last 20yrs. I truly enjoy connecting with students and helping them reach their musical goals. It is great to see students overcome how to play a piece or a lick and get the confidence to apply their new skills in other musical situations. Teaching virtually is something new I’ve been doing lately. It’s a great alternative way to connect with students especially in leui of the recent Covid-19 situation. It’s also a nice way to connect with students from all over the world.
I use all types of books including Syncopation, Stick Control, New Breed, Advanced Funk Studies. Also I like to use other media where possible to teach different styles. Once the beginning student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce more musical applications related to real music. Preferably music the student is interested to learn to play. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
I love to interact with students and help them achieve their personal goals. As mentioned previously, I believe it’s really important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this concept by working to set achievable goals for my students. Also I work to better understand and find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. There are certain ideas and concepts that generally apply to all musical styles and I do try to introduce these in a variety of ways based on the student.
