Overview:
I have a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction/Music from Tennessee State University. No matter the teaching situation, for the student and teacher, preparation and opportunity to learn are key. All aspects of Instrumental and Commercial Percussion are addressed. From the most fundamental to advanced concepts. I have performed at the Tennessee State Day of Percussion, The National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy, Mompox and Sinu Jazz Festivals, and The Percussive Arts Society International Convention. My recent projects include, 55 Central Park West: Dream Index, and Presentation on Fundamentals of Percussion for Students and Teachers.
EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching began in high school, about twenty years ago. Way before I had any degrees in music. I was very involved in the instrumental music program at my school and took private lessons to reinforce and enhance my knowledge and practice of the craft. A friend of mine was interested in drum set so I taught him the same way my teacher taught me. I shared whatever information I could so he could practice correctly and play with other musicians. I still have the same idea about teaching. I am sharing acquired knowledge with the student. I developed the method of instruction over the years and it is still a fundamentals and common elements based approach. My students past and present have found this beneficial, gained facility on the instrument, and they are confident in any musical endeavor they seek out.
METHODS USED
My instructional method does not lean toward one method book for instruction. There is however a useful combination of selected literature, excerpts, solos, exercises and play alongs in addition to anything the student wants or has to work on. I teach technique and fundamentals that are applicable to all styles, not just one particular style. I'm teaching you to play music. Not a collection of beats and fills. Standards are met and individual goals are not ignored. Everything taught is based on a fundamental approach and can be applied to instrumental and commercial music situations.
LESSON STYLE
Often times when it comes to music instruction some misleading statements come up. A popular misconception is that playing a instrument is all muscle memory. This is not a complete or true statement. Muscle memory is only a part, it is the recall mechanism of what we have practiced. If you learn something wrong you will recall it wrong. Having a fundamental understanding of how drumming works can make the experience of learning to play great for the student. I'm teaching you to be a musician not to learn beats and fills.
