I am a seasoned instructor and musician who above all else believes music is FUN! From the moment I picked up drumsticks as a teenager in Wyoming I knew drums were my instrument and wherever I went they were going to be a part of me. I’ve enjoyed playing in multiple bands over the years with some of the best musicians the regions had to offer and it always made me happy. I’ve never stopped learning and strive to pass on what others have taught me. Being a musician means being a member of larger family of like-minded people who will help you on your journey. Whether you are just starting, jumping back in, or need to reach the next level I would be honored to travel the path with you. It is time to try something new and FUN!
I started teaching drums in Wyoming in the 90s when after a show I was approached by a fan wanting lessons. It was a very pivotal point as I learned that teaching was even more rewarding than performing and I have been teaching since. While growing as a musician I have incorporated all that I have learned into the lessons (to include what not to do.) I like to emphasize why we are dong certain things and how those things will help you. I have performed with and been mentored by great musicians across this country (including Guam) and strive to bring that experience to the student. It is very rewarding to watch someone grow as a musician and know that you are helping him or her on that journey.
When I start with student new to the drums I begin with the drum set. Nobody wants to start with a pad and rudiments; lets face it we want to play the kit because it is fun. I introduce the various parts of the kit allowing the student to play on each part, hi hat, crash cymbal, snare, etc. We then move to grip and beginning beats / independent limb control. After we have established the basics on the kit we start to work on rudiments, reading, grip (we will come back to grip a lot,) dynamics, and fills. I always try to provide purpose behind elements in a lesson, an explanation as to WHY we are working on something and HOW it will be used. With more advanced students we will assess where they are, where they want to be and build a plan to achieve that goal. The universal constant in drums is they are fun; I want every student to enjoy what they are doing while they grow as a musician.
I believe that learning an instrument is a rewarding and noble endeavor but with most things in life it is not done alone. My philosophy is that the instructor is there as a guide and friend in the adventure. In this journey there is many ways to get where you are going. My job is to help find the path that works for you and travel that road with you. I have found no two students are the same and they respond and learn differently. That means I have to adapt to each student, build rapport and teach depending on the needs each student. In short, we are in this together.
