Broadway pit musician New York
Overview:
Ive been a professional musician for the last 20 yrs and have appeared in Jazz festivals in Europe, Australia and the United States. Since relocating to New York I have been the principle bassist on Broadway NYC and held several jazz residencies at clubs and hotels in and around the NYC area. Some of the music I've played here and abroad as an upright bassist includes straight ahead jazz, bebop, vocal workshops, jazz big band as well as salsa and afro cuban music. As an electric bassist I have played many styles from blues to country and from rock to ska.
EXPERIENCE
Ever since I first started playing I was always into teaching and sharing knowledge, in the practice room, on the bandstand. I was always learning and always trying to share what I knew to make the music sound better. Thats what its about really, trying to make the music as good as it can be, trying to make the vocalist or saxophone player sound great. Thats the role of the bassist. Thats what I try to bring to my teaching style, sharing and making the student sound great through practicing the core fundamentals all the great players know and practice.
METHODS USED
I have written several books for the upright and electric bass player that cover all aspects of learning to play the bass. Depending on goals, for most upright players I would recommend a solid grounding in Simandl for learning the hand positions and fingerboard. I also recommend transcribing as well as sight reading and some jazz harmony. All these things are incorporated into my lessons. For electric and upright players I recommend learning tunes, musicianship, technical studies, and maintaining a professional attitude on the gig.
LESSON STYLE
I have an internal library of things I've been taught along the way. After listening to the student and hearing what their goals are I then tune in to the best way to incorporate fundamentals and goal setting. Making the lessons suited to the individual student is what I strive for. Its an exchange, I'm sharing what I know and I'm learning as well by seeing the student progress. Ultimately I want to see them reach their goals, some strive for stardom some don't. Its all about being the best that you can be with the available time you have. After all music is about enjoyment and sharing a universal language.
