I first started really getting into music when I was 13 and started playing drums and guitar, picking up piano a couple years later. In 2005 I graduated from the Journeyman Program in Musical Performance at Musicians Institute in Hollywood California. Since then I've been trying my hand at different musical endeavors such as playing in bands, writing my own music, composing for indie games as well as doing covers of my favorite old video game songs. In 2011, I started a YouTube channel with my band, which performs acoustic guitar duets of popular video game songs. Now we travel around the country performing at various video game and anime conventions.
I began teaching in 2008 for a company where I taught for about five years. I have worked with students of many different ages teaching Guitar, Piano and Drums. I believe to really see any results with your instrument is going to require a solid dedication to practicing. Especially for beginners. The main thing is you really have to enjoy what you're doing as you're learning this new instrument or else becoming proficient at it is going to be a struggle. In order to keep it interesting I try to encourage students to be creative and try their hand at making up their own music, whether that be writing it out on sheet music or improvising right there on the spot.
I find the Hal Leonard Series works as a tool for helping students understand musical concepts right away. For students who are more advanced I will plan their lessons based on what their goals are. Every student is different: Some want to compete in recitals, some want to play for their friends and family when they come over, some want to compose their own musical pieces, some people just wanna jam! Part of my job is to help the student figure out what exactly it is they want to do with music in the first place.
More than anything music should be fun. The greatest musicians are the ones who enjoy playing music even when they're just practicing. I like to teach in a way that involves asking the student questions in order to get them to figure out the answer for themself, rather than just lecturing the whole time while they start daydreaming! This way the student is more involved in the learning process and it can make their time spent learning an instrument more worth it.
