Overview:
I help students to find their forte. I discovered what motivates them through years of teaching in my studio, students' homes, music schools and instrument shops. Highlights of my teaching career include teaching at The L.A. Conservatory of Music and Eubanks Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, and presidency of the Music Teachers Association of California, San Fernando East Valley. While I played at the piano, several congregations have sung God’s praises. I have played at weddings in church as well as as secular settings. I've played Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Leroy Anderson and other American composers for many parties through the years.
EXPERIENCE
While getting my Masters in Music, I assisted teaching Music Theory at the University of Iowa. From there,I taught classes of students at the West Bank School Of Music in Minneapolis. From the Midwest to the Southwest: I taught students at Los Angeles schools and privately there also. I learned what were the best musical works with which to engage students: - Beloved classics by Beethoven, Chopin and others - New Age music by Winston, Einaudi, and Yanni - Gospel works in the best arrangements for a student's level, and - Folk music and works from American History, such as Ragtime, classic Blues, and Jazz-Age music.
METHODS USED
Along with a strong background of fundamentals found in Faber's Adventures, Burnam's Step By Step, and Snell's Repertoire, I help students from five to nine with personal selections based on interest. Examples would be Disney songs (Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast), Gospel and Religious (Jesus Loves Me, the Dreydl song), or superheroes (Spiderman). Ten to 14-year olds have used favorites from around the world -(everything from Greensleeves to Malaguena, In the Hall of the Mountain King and more superheroes like Batman and Iron Man), plus classics by Beethoven and Bach. Fifteen and older are playing New Age: "Le Ondes", "Moon" or "In the Mirror", as well as Beethoven's Tempest and Chopin Waltzes.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching is very goal-oriented. Some adults may want the satisfaction of simply playing Blues, or Fur Elise, or "Don't Stop Believin'" for their own enjoyment, and we work through the music easily as their practice time allows. Parents have the opportunity to see their children shine in recitals twice a year. During their lessons, the younger student and I work hard on note-reading, rhythm, and expression. We set weekly goals in order to be ready by performance time. This includes thirty minutes of daily practice, with new reading every lesson. With regular practice and use of the metronome for more advanced students, this Fall's recital is slated to include such diverse styles as Classical, New Age, Praise music, and Classic Blues.
