Overview:
I started drum lessons when I was 12. I started playing in hotels at 15 years of age with show bands and rock bands. I have played with high school bands at Carnegie Hall in New York and traveled to many places because of music. When I went off to graduate school my long time band mate went on the road as a professional musician. But I never stopped playing. I have played in Concert Band, Rock bands, Jazz Bands and more.I was always to go to drummer when someone needed a great drummer. I currently play in my own jazz band and a successful Rockabilly Band playing the best music of the 50s... I am having the time of my life!
EXPERIENCE
I believe that drum has to start with the basics, I used to practice at least one hour a day every day for over 10 years. I still practice on a regular basis with my pads and on my drums. So many drummers you see today are not schooled and its a shame. if you start with a good solid foundation you can be the best there is. I always strived to be the best drummer that I can be.Learning can be fun if taught the right way. I love to see my students become great musicians.... When I was an accomplished drummer I spent money to take lessons in Manhattan from some famous drummers at the time just so I can improve...Always learning and getting better.
METHODS USED
I always start my lessons with the basics. You have to learn the rudiments. We start with a book called stick control and move on to syncopation and more. We learn to hold the sticks the right way so you can play any technique later on. We concentrate on control and sounding clean. We move on to drum beats and fills . Eventually we learn syncopation with hands and feet. We learn dynamics and reading music..... Rock beats, Jazz , Latin and more. How to tune drums...Clean drums...And twirl sticks for looks
LESSON STYLE
It is great to see my students have a passion for playing. That is because I love playing the drums every day. I emphasize that learning the basics can be a bit boring, but the end results will be a drummer with skills that will be in demand. Building a good foundation makes for a schooled accomplished drummer. I always teach by example. Students get to watch what I do...Not just what I say.. I can Play! I encourage my students to find a band early in their lessons so they can see the fruits of their practicing.
