I am a native Marylander, born and raised in Baltimore. I have a career as an instrumental music teacher. I teach concert band and string orchestra to elementary, middle, and high school students. I am currently writing my own instrumental method books and my own compositions for both concert band and string orchestra. I am a graduate from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. I earned my certification in Administration and specializing in School Improvement Leadership (ELCC). I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Towson State University in Music Education. I studied music performance on trumpet at Peabody. I currently hold a Maryland Teaching Certificate in Instrumental Music Education (N-12) and an Advanced Professional Certificate.
EXPERIENCE
My professional experience includes trumpet with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the Fabulous Fifties Big Band. My professional teaching experience started in 1986 with teaching students one-on-one. My students have achieved lifelong skills on piano, brass, woodwind, and guitar. I teach in my studio and I travel to family homes. I teach classical, jazz, and gospel music styles. Combining instruction with performance and additional auditions will compliment any student's music experience.
METHODS USED
I use many different learning materials, depending on the student, instrument, and musical goal. Alfred lesson book series for piano, Arban's method book for brass players, Standard of Excellence for many woodwind players, and additional material for additional student learning. I also teach piano and I encourage every student to supplement their music experience with piano lessons. I also encourage every student to participate in recording some part of their musical expression. recording etudes, solos, and ensembles.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching is student-centered. Teacher demonstration leads the way for any student on any instrument. Students are encouraged to set long-term goals and short-term goals. Students are encouraged to be stakeholders in their own development and their own future. Students are encouraged to listen to as many other artists as possible. Success is not a point of arrival, but a process. My experience at the Peabody Institute prepared me as a performer and as a teacher. Students are encouraged to consider questions from a Socratic perspective.
