22 Years of Experience. Classically trained from the age of 6
I'm a drummer of 22 years!, I have featured on numerous records as a session drummer, played hundreds of shows across the country (mostly rock/metal but occasionally jazz/funk/country) I have been classically trained from age 6-present (yes, teachers need teachers too! (:) Specializing in Jazz, Rock, and Funk. I love drumming. It's been my passion since I can remember. My whole goal and reasoning for teaching is to help people develop their skills, but also see them gain a passion in the drums. It's a lot of repetition, and HARD work, but like I tell my students... Drumming is supposed to be fun, so let's have fun while we learn!
I've been a drummer for 22 years, and a teacher for going on 2 now. I mostly travel and do private lessons, but can accommodate any situation! I played in symphonic band throughout college, along with being in multiple different projects in multiple genres. I played my first gig at the age of 12, and I just love playing drums. I started out on snare, then got a kit for my 7th birthday, and I never looked back! In High School and College, I played in the drumline, specifically the bassline, first as the 5th bassist then moving to 1st.
When I teach a new student, I like to get them playing something fun first! I love to have my students playing a basic 4/4 rock beat by the end of the first lesson. Drumming is so much fun, so lets not get right into the rudiments and technique RIGHT away! Some things do have to be taught before that, the very basics like how to hold drumsticks properly, hand position, etc. before that, but it's the first lesson. I want you to have something tangible to see that you CAN do this! the we dive into the first rudiments, get their technique even better, and get them started learning out of the book "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" by George L Stone. I consider it essential for students to have great control of their hands and sticks before we really get to harder material. All lessons are taught with a metronome, and we up the tempo as we go.
I consider myself to be a laid-back, fun instructor! I want you or your child to have a passion and love for this art like I do. I just love to see people improving their skills, and I push them to push themselves! I'm not a stern or overbearing teacher, but I do have expectations. I only ask that they practice as much as they can in the time between lessons! Drumming is all about repetition, and without that, drumming (and every instrument) is hard to learn! I have between lesson plans for all levels. After the first lesson, I get my students the book "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" by George L Stone. I consider it essential for students to have great control of their hands and sticks before we really get to harder material. All lessons are taught with a metronome, and we up the tempo as we go.
