I believe that it is a privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to share in the growth and development of another person's talent and career. I have influenced the careers of many successful singers, actors, and songwriters of various ages and styles, who have have signed big record deals, appeared in major motion pictures and network TV shows like The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, American Idol, the Grammy Awards, Billboard Awards, Dove Awards, American Music Awards, and various shows on Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, WB, and more, and have performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and on the Broadway stage in NYC. I started performing music at age 14, and quickly move on to semi-pro and professional status, performing pop, rock, country, folk, and more in various bands and performing groups. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Theater, I joined the cast of Up With People and began a world concert tour, performing on awesome stages, such as the Royal Albert Hall in London. I have performed over 2000 performances at Denver's Heritage Square Opera House, Country Dinner Playhouse, and the Goldenrod Showboat in St. Louis. Over the years, I have studied with several vocal teachers, including famous coach to the stars, Seth Riggs in Los Angeles. My studio is a professional and creative environment with all the neccessary equipment to aid in making it fun and productive.
I taught private guitar lessons continuously, while in highschool and college. In between engagements in my performing career, I would always return to teaching. In 1992 I was certified by Dr. L Scott Martin, Phd from Juilliard, to teach vocal performance at his Academy of the Arts in Denver, and I have continued to the present, to coach young singers to express themselves with music. I have been blessed in helping many of my students to reach some impressive accomplishments in music, such major record deals, appearances on TV and Film, and getting in to some great music colleges. I've had two students compete on American Idol and other various international talent competitions. One of my greatest joys, is to work with fresh, new and eager students and to watch them grow as performers.
Vocal technique, including breath support, pitch, range, tone, and style are important for every singer. However, each student is not the same, and it is important to help a student find their natural voice and work from there. A huge part of becoming a better singer has to do with building confidence. Confidence comes from having little successes and getting in touch with one's own natural sound. Then wonderful new sounds and feelings can be built from there. Over the years I have turned students who, at first showed little natural ability, into confident performers speading the joy of their music to happy audiences. When neccessary, I teach singers and guitar students to read music. I also love to combine teaching singing and guitar to help students experience the pleasure of self-accompaniment.
I believe in Keeping it Fun! We get to play. Playing is a big part of the creative process, in that it involves experimenting and finding new ideas, thoughts, and processes that work best for each individual and that will lead to the perfect practice and the excitement of performance. When a student is ready, I will encourage them to do some suggested performing opportunities. Nothing is more thrilling to me and sometimes emotional, than to see one of my students progress to the point of loving music as much as I do, and to go on and spread the good to all those who will listen.
