Throughout my extensive teaching career, I have been passionately committed to nurturing the musical talents of my students, guiding them to achieve remarkable accomplishments. As a registered Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC) educator, I take pride in my students' annual participation in the Certificate of Merit program, resulting in them consistently receiving State Honors. In addition to this success, my students have also proven themselves in various piano competitions across California, invariably securing prizes for their outstanding performances. My teaching philosophy centers around fostering strong and lasting relationships with my students, enabling them to feel supported and motivated as they progress in their musical journeys. These connections often begin when my students are as young as 5 or 6 years old and continue to thrive throughout their formative years. I feel immensely gratified to have been an integral part of their growth and development, and it is a true honor to witness their achievements as they ultimately pursue their college education and embark on new chapters of their lives.
In my piano teaching practice, I employ a diverse range of methods to ensure that students receive a comprehensive musical education. Utilizing Keith Snell's method books as a primary resource, I strive to provide a solid foundation in piano technique, repertoire, and musicianship. Additionally, I incorporate Julie McIntosh Johnson's theory method books, tailoring the materials to each student's unique skill level in order to deepen their understanding of music theory. Central to my teaching approach is the goal of helping students memorize a piece of work, thereby enabling them to reach a certain level of performance mastery. This focus not only cultivates discipline and dedication but also instills a sense of accomplishment and pride in their progress. Through this multifaceted approach, I am committed to fostering a well-rounded and enriching musical experience for each of my students.
My teaching style revolves around engaging with students on a deeper level to explore the character and emotional essence of each musical work. Recognizing that every student possesses a unique personality and temperament, I adapt my approach to align with their individual needs and learning styles. I firmly believe that fostering a consistent practice routine, such as dedicating at least 20 minutes per day, not only enhances their piano skills but also instills valuable life habits that contribute to their overall development. To reinforce the concepts and techniques covered during each lesson, I encourage students to reflect on their progress by summarizing what we've accomplished that day. This practice of active recall strengthens their understanding and retention of the material, ensuring that they can effectively apply these learnings to future practice sessions and performances. By incorporating these strategies, I strive to create a nurturing, supportive, and fulfilling learning environment that empowers students to reach their full potential.
