I have a great breadth and depth of experience with instrumental music education. Clarinet has been my primary performance instrument, but I have found over the years that the techniques that I use to teach clarinet are easily and successfully transferable to the other instruments that I teach. Besides the clarinet, I also teach saxophone, guitar, violin and piano throughout the Colorado Springs area. Of course the differences have to do with embouchere, fingerings (which are similar to the clarinet), and tone production. I have played at Lincoln Center with the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the direction of William D. Revelli. I was clarinet soloist with the Performing Arts Abroad when we toured Europe for two weeks. I have been Principal Clarinet with the Pikes Peak Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra of the Springs in Colorado Springs.
Thirty-five years teaching in private studios and schools in Michigan, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado
Private music teacher: clarinet, saxophone, classical guitar and finger picking, beginning piano and violin.<
Principal Clarinet, Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, 1994-2003.
Band Director, Farmington Public Schools; Gadsden Public Schools; Academy School District #20; Widefield Public Schools; Cheyenne Mountain Charter Academy
Director of Church Music and Youth Choir, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Littleton, Colorado
Shepherd of the Springs Lutheran Church, Director of Adult and Youth Choirs, Colorado Springs, CO Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Interim Director of the Adult Choir, Bell Choir, Brass Ensemble, and Woodwinds.
My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. When the student can successfully play a passage correctly then the work turns into fun music making. I use this process at all levels. I love to teach with this method of isolation because it always improves the student's playing.
She was great!
Susan is very patient and always knows how to approach our daughter in a kind and professional manner when our daughter gets "stuck". She is a great fit for our daughter and an outstanding teacher and instructor. Our daughter is learning a lot and that prepares her for future successes.
She is awesome

No nonsense and challenging. For our son this was necessary and motivating. He has shown great progress under her tutelage.
Susan is very patient and is able to get the best out of our son (without him getting confused or frustrated). He is learning a lot and is really enjoying himself.
My daughter had lessons with Susan in clarinet and piano. Sue is great in clarinet, helped to motivate her and improve her skills a lot. They even played nice duets together. Thank you!
