Overview:

I have a great breadth and depth of experience with instrumental music education. Clarinet has been my primary performance instrument, but I have found over the years that the techniques that I use to teach clarinet are easily and successfully transferable to the other instruments that I teach. Besides the clarinet, I also teach saxophone, guitar, violin and piano throughout the Colorado Springs area. Of course the differences have to do with embouchere, fingerings (which are similar to the clarinet), and tone production.  I have played at Lincoln Center with the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the direction of William D. Revelli. I was clarinet soloist with the Performing Arts Abroad when we toured Europe for two weeks. I have been Principal Clarinet with the Pikes Peak Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra of the Springs in Colorado Springs.

METHODS USED
I use the Rubank Method for beginning, intermediate, and advanced clarinet and Saxophone. This series emphasizes the simple concepts to the advanced fundamentals, i.e. rhythm, articulation, breath support, fingerings. The lesson plans are incorporated in the Rubank Method with an easy progression through the fundamental starting with whole notes, half notes, quarter notes and simple to complex rhythms. For the advanced clarinet student the Rose 32 Etudes are an essential addition to the lessons as well as the Klose Method. The Rubank Method offers some solos, but in addition, for the High School student I teach them the Weber Concertino, Mozart Concerto- first movement, Brahms Second Sonata for the advanced High School and College student. Lesson plans for the advanced High School student include scales, major and minor, Rose Etudes and solos. I love it when my students play with confidence and accuracy(rhythmically, fingerings, correct pitch and phrasing. S
LESSON STYLE

My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. When the student can successfully play a passage correctly then the work turns into fun music making. I use this process at all levels. I love to teach with this method of isolation because it always improves the student's playing.
