My childhood in the Washington DC area fueled my love of music. I spent weekends listening to military bands and the National Symphony… I wanted to be on that stage! I began putting together musical ensembles with my students while completing my Bachelor of music, ED At George Mason University, VA. I spent weekends with groups of junior high school and high school students performing at churches and community events. During my enlistment in the United States Army band, Washington, DC…I received my Masters degree in music performance from The Catholic University of America, D.C. I enjoy helping my students reach their performance goals… whatever they may be. I also enjoy challenging my students to be better than they could have imagined.
My teaching career started when I was 16 years old… I spent the last two years of high school teaching part time in the public schools and working with private students in my community. I spent a good deal of my senior year of high school and college participating in various competitions, I’m very competitive and have a lot of experience with audition prep! I am convinced that auditions make you a better musician. As a member of the United States Army band, “Pershings Own” , in Washington DC, I performed many times every day for state occasions, parades and even a performance at Carnegie Hall. Boston provided many opportunities for performance including , The Lowell house opera orchestra… Harvard University , Mercury Orchestra, Newton symphony… Lincoln Center, Harvard university band… The Hatch Shell. Musicians are amazing people, I would love for my students to have many opportunities to meet and Collaborate with great musicians.
My philosophy is, the better musician you are… The more fun it is! You have to love practicing, you can’t progress if you don’t practice… So let’s make practicing enjoyable. Practicing is enjoyable if you can see progress, I really focus on achievable goals. For students in school… School music always comes first, I want to support the band director and help my students succeed in class! For adult students….I want to respect each students goals. This may be anything from learning to play happy birthday for the grandkids to learning the skills to play in a performing group, community band or orchestra.
My teaching style is, mastery. Learning a musical instrument is a physical, mental, emotional skill which can be learned by anybody. The better technique you have, the easier making music will be and the more enjoyable! I combine structured technique exercises with “Fun music”, whatever that may be for each individual student. For students in school, school music always comes first. The first thing that we talk about in lessons is student goals. This may be Upcoming auditions for college, high school or picking up an instrument for the first time! I am very goal oriented and love nothing more than helping my students meet their goals.
