I'm a violin teacher with over 10 years of experience teaching all age groups. I've taught private lessons and orchestra classes at the public and private level. I'm known for my ability to teach vibrato, bow hold, position, tone production and scales. I've worked with beginners up to advanced students. Are you preparing for an audition? I can assist you with auditions for high school and college levels. I look forward to meeting you. I'm immediately available and have openings for several students.
I started teaching over ten years ago. I have taught several amazing violin and piano students ages 4-16 over the years. In my experience, I've found that the Suzuki Violin method books work very well for private lessons but can teach other methods. I have a degree in violin performance and play the piano as well. I've also taught 4th-12th grade orchestra in Arizona and Utah. Please contact me to have a trial lesson for yourself or your child. I'll be happy to meet with you to talk about your interests.
For beginning students, I like the Suzuki method for violin. I've been trained in that method. I'm also very flexible and like to incorporate other styles into our lessons. I believe that students develop skills quickly when they have a good understanding of hand position, note reading and ear training. I like to start with these skills and move forward with other facets of music such as technique, stylistic training and even audition training. I have the skills to teach from beginners to advanced students. I can help advanced violinists with tone production, scales and vibrato. Let me know what skills you're looking to develop. I have some training in helping you develop your talent.
I enjoy teaching because I have a love for music. It's my hope that this love and motivation to play well will be passed on to my students. It's so rewarding to me to see my students learning and growing in their musical abilities. I offer plenty of praise and encouragement. I like to see parents enjoying their children's progress as they master their chosen instrument. It's worth the time and effort to develop these skills. It will bring a lifetime of fulfillment. Musical training is a lot of work but the work is equal to the reward.
Susanna taught both violin and piano lessons to our daughters (ages 7 & 9) for nearly two years. She is a wonderful musician in her own right and as a teacher she was patient, encouraging, and helped my daughters develop their musical talents. She gave them a solid foundation in the fundamentals of musical performance. She was organized and explained expectations with clarity and caring. I'm so grateful for everything she did to advance my daughters' skill levels. I highly recommend her.
Susanna is an amazing violin teacher! My son took lessons from her starting at age 7 and into high school. She was so patient with him and always found a way to compliment and encourage. When Ian wanted to try different styles of music, Susanna encouraged him to go search for it and bring it to lessons. He was able to learn classic violin along with his own interests. I highly recommend Susanna!
She’s been teaching my 5 year old for about 5 weeks and she is great! Great enthusiasm and rolls with the punches and stubbornness of my little one. I would definitely recommend Susanna Smith!
Susanna is a patient, kind and detailed teacher. My daughter is enjoying her weekly sessions and is eager to learn more every week. Suanna goes the extra mile to ensure my daughter learns to play!
I am an adult student who began playing the violin during the COVID pandemic in late 2020. My first teacher provided lessons in person at my home in Washington, DC. After moving back to Connecticut in April 2023, Susanna became my second teacher and first to teach exclusively online. Our lessons occur via Facetime and her online instruction is just as effective as the in-person lessons I experienced in the beginning. She can hear when notes are out of tune and help to make corrections. She has also helped me substantially improve the tone of the music I play with various exercises. In addition to introducing me to Suzuki Volume 2, which I love, she also works with me on popular songs I choose to play purely for the enjoyment of myself and my family. She is an experienced teacher with a very calm manner about her that makes our 45-minute lessons both relaxing and enjoyable. I highly recommend her for students at any age and level of experience.
