Bachelor Degree: Berklee College of Music
I have been singing since the age of 3. I first started with the basics of Carnatic music, then I moved to learning Hindustani music. After moving to Shanghai in 2005, I got exposed to various kinds of contemporary music. (Bollywood and Western). Music has always been my passion. It has helped me during my difficult childhood. I first studied Foundation of Music in K.M Music Conservatory, Chennai. Then I moved to Malaysia to study Berklee Transfer Programme at International College of Music (ICOM). Berklee has always been a dream of mine. I studied Music Therapy at Berklee College of Music in 2015. I worked with children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health. I had been an ardent member of the Berklee Indian Ensemble. I worked with various artists such as Vijay Prakash, Raghu Dixit, Indian Ocean and Shreya Ghoshal. I also went on a tour with them once. I have been a member of "The Lotus Sound", a circle singing group. We went on our first tour, to participate in an International Acapella competition at Russia. We have also recorded an EP.
My mom was a Carnatic music teacher. I had once subbed for her when she was late coming from work. It was fun teaching her students. My mom also worked with children with special needs. I have watched her work and I got inspired by her. I wanted to go into Music Therapy after seeing her work, as well as the experiencing of assisting her. I have had a troubled childhood, and music helped me. I thought if music can help me, it can help various other people. I always set up goals and needs of my clients, and would like to do the same with my students. I love inspiring and motivating others, so that they can achieve their goals.
I will first start with warm-up. I will start with some scales. Then I will work on breathing techniques, and then posture. I will also explain the biology of vocal cords. Along with songs that they plan to sing for recitals, I will also expect them to bring a song that they would like to learn, because I don't want them to forget why they chose music in the first place i.e because they like it. Sometimes its important to have fun. I will also work on getting through emotions, through some acting techniques. They will also have to bring a monologue at some point.
Being a Music Therapy major, I am very passionate about working with people. I am very empathetic. I give my life to students. I will set up goals and objectives for my students so that they can fulfill their dreams. Along with that, I love inspiring and motivating students. I will try to give them quotes, as well as take deep breaths and do some facial exercises, and guided meditation from time to time. It is very important to relax and love music, than just doing it for exam purpose. I want music to be a great support for my students, as music was there for me during their troubled childhood.
