I am a passionate flutist and both of my parents played flute so I have played for any years . I am retired librarian and teacher and have taught in public schools. As I have taken lessons from several teachers, I have a brod musical background inclassical, jazz, and Latin music. I currently play in the Pike's Peak flute choir in Colorado Springs and would love to instruct and inspire beginning and intermediate students or play in group of advanced students. As I have only taught flute to my granddaughter and helped my daughter with violin previously my rates are very reasonable. However my father was a music teacher who attended the New England conservatory of music and I learned a great deal from him. I have a very good knowledge of flute technique, interpretation, and repertoire and have played in bands, orchestras, flute choirs, and solo performing in churches and galleries.
My teaching experience includes employment as a school librarian, teaching assistant and grade school, high school, and college tutor. I have taken lessons from four excellent professional flute teachers and this experience allows me to follow heir teaching methods in instructing my students. A combination of patience, persistence, and passion makes a good teacher and a good student. However students may choose the correct instrument for them to achieve maximum tone quality and are of playing and then need to practice, practice, practice. A good teacher will inspire her students to learn.
I teach beginning students the fundamentals using tried and true exercise books and help them pick the best instrument for them. For intermediate students I draw from my large collection of music to advance their technique and improve their expression. With more advanced students we work on specific problem areas they may be having such as tone quality, or advanced or alternate fingering techniques using music from classical, jazz and orchestral works. I work at the students own pace but try to encourage them to set high goals and try to attain them.
I find teaching very rewarding and love to help students learn t love the flute and music. I try to teach music theory as well as flute technique and encourage music appreciation. Challenging h student with new material each lesson and trying to find out what inspires the student helps to keep lessons challenging and interesting. I also like to arrange for students to play together in duets and ensembles and to find out what their musical connection are with in their school or community. Most of all I like to make learning the flute fun and exciting.
