B.A. - Music, Wesleyan College M.M. -Music Eduacation, Boston University
Awards:
I have had the privilege of performing and coaching at numerous private and public institutions including the Harmonia School of Music and the Washington National Opera. Additionally, I've performed extensively throughout the southeast. Currently, I teach at a local college.
Overview:
< My teaching experience includes public school, private schools, homeschool groups, and individual studio instruction. Most recently, I am an undergraduate music instructor. I love performing but more that that I love to see my students embrace a lifelong love of music. I employ a variety of hands-on techniques that engage students and use incentives to help them achieve success. In a collaboration with parents, I seek to know the student and set up a positive reinforcement dynamic. Typically, this system allows me to know the individual and set up a system that they can be successful in.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for the past 17 years. I enjoy the challenge of meeting each student's needs and creating an individual teaching plan to help students achieve their goals. I have had the opportunity to work with preschool through undergraduate students. My experience as a high school chorus teacher, Teaching Artist with the Washington National Opera, guest vocalist for the Ghanian ambassador, and part-time professor have bolster my ambition to bring music to students "where they are". Truly, music is for everyone. Bravo to students who have the desire to embrace the unknown and expand their knowledge.
METHODS USED
Typically, I favor using traditional curriculum for beginning students (Alfred, Faber, Bastian). As a student progresses we typically incorporate Clemeneti sonatinas and the students favorite pop/modern songs. When a student achieves an advanced level of difficulty curriculum is purchased depending on the student's goals, college aspirations, and learning objectives. I typically administer a Classical Method of education, whether in private lessons or the classroom. It is my hope that time in my classroom encourages dialectic conversation and reaps gains in every learning situation.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching goal is to encourage my students to be lifelong patrons of the arts. I understand that every student may not be interested in a career in music. I encourage students to set goals and work toward them. These goals may include a scholarship audition, playing a piece in front of a family member, or booking their first professional "gig." My main goal is to provide inspiration and inspire a student ( no matter what the starting place) to pick a 'first goal." This "first goal" allow the student to set a goal and create a path for success under the supervision of a trained professional.
