Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated, violinist, student, and teacher. I have been playing violin since the age of 7 and continue to study and play at University of Massachusetts Amherst. In the past, I have put together string quartets and have played in a variety of ensembles for different settings; musicals, formal concerts, weddings, etc.... I have 2 years of experience teaching middle school violinists in my hometown through internships. Examples of my previous work include: - Received "Excellence in Fine Arts Award" in my Senior year of High school - Organized and arranged pieces for various ensembles - Play in a variety of groups for musicals, formal concerts, & gigs
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching violin for about 3 years and general music for about 4. I have experience teaching, instructing, and mentoring music students from the ages of 9-13. Not only have I taught violin, but also piano and general music theory to many middle school students and even my past and present peers. Over the years I have learned that each student has their own strengths and weaknesses and I pride myself in understanding them on a professional, but personal level. I thoroughly enjoy helping each and every one of my students develop into passionate and knowledgeable musicians.
METHODS USED
I recognize that each student is different from the next, and while I prefer to guide all students through a similar structure, I always make conscious and consistent efforts to evaluate each student's progression to determine what needs the most work. I prefer to teach alongside the book series "Essential Elements for Strings" as it provides a well-thought out plan for each level of playing ability. However, I have no problem using other books if the student prefers.
For beginner students, I prefer to start with these very important aspects - Basic technique (bow and violin hold) - String names and finger placement w/ names - Proper bow stroke - Reading sheet music (if not already able to)
For Intermediate students: Continuation of technical sklls - Scales with appropriate fingering and turns - Solo repertoire in order to continue teaching fundamental skills while developing musicality
I do not teach advanced students
LESSON STYLE
When teaching new students, I think it is very important to understand the student's experience with music. Doing this allows me to cater my approach to each individual student. During lessons and when planning for them, I use this knowledge to find the best way to convey information. Usually lessons are once a week so at end of each session, I write down 2 to 3 goals that I want the student to start working towards. This allows for the student to maximize their practice time during the week, as well as improve in a structured and noticeable way.
