Overview:
I'm a Portland native who firmly believes that music is a lifelong pursuit. Whether playing music for fun, school, or even competition, there's always something new to learn and experience. My music adventures began with piano lessons, then switched to the clarinet when the first band was formed at my elementary school. Little did I know i'd still be playing and having as much fun as when I first started. Having played in a variety of ensembles throughout my life, it is a joy to currently play in the Portland Wind Symphony which exemplifies music performance at a high level even after finishing school.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began with giving private lessons in 1997 when I caught the 'teaching bug' seeing someone make actual progress and improvement. My teaching methods and training further developed during pedagogy classes and workshops during and after college.
Performance experience includes formal recitals to complete my undergraduate degree, Portland Wind Symphony, Portland Community Wind Band, Northwest Wind Symphony, Opera Theater Oregon, Oregon Symphonic Band, North Coast Symphonic Band, Astoria Music Festival and a variety of small chamber ensembles.
METHODS USED
For all experience levels, long tones are essential to a good playing foundation. Making long tones a regular part of daily practice is key to developing a strong sound and extended lung capacity.
Beginners focus on embouchure, hand position, correct fingerings, note reading, and basic rhythms.
Intermediate and advanced players work on learning major and minor scales, etude studies and a variety of solo clarinet repertoire.
Students are encouraged to listen to a variety of professional clarinet recordings of all genres to develop an ear for different clarinet tones and styles.
LESSON STYLE
Weekly 45 minute lessons focus on tone production, technique, theory, and musicianship through exercises, etudes, solos, and duets. Students are always welcome to bring in music they are interested in working on, whether for school, contest, or just for fun.
I welcome students of all ages and abilities who are inquisitive, persistent, hard working, and who put forth their best efforts during lessons and weekly practice.
Though there are natural progressions to learning an instrument that I can set for a student, I always want to know what the student hopes to gain from studying the clarinet. That goal helps me shape the overall plan and focus of lessons for the long term.
