Overview:
I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2004, I graduated from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor with a Bachelor Degree in Music Education. I've performed with the Waterloo Wind Band (Austin), the Austin Symphonic Band, the Cypress Symphonic Band, and the Shimmer Flute Choir. In high school, I attended the Texas All State Band (flute), and the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest (flute and piano). I've taught beginning and intermediate flute and piano lessons for the past 15 years.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons 15 years ago, and have been teaching students at my home and at students' houses. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I emphasize for my students. To truly become an accomplished musician, a student must be motivated to practice daily. I've found that teaching both classical and modern music motivates students to practice and continue to learn. Students must also have a strong background in music theory; the foundation for all musical learning. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as composing their own original pieces. I look forward to meeting you and beginning the joys and rewards of learning to play an instrument!
METHODS USED
For beginning piano students, I use the Faber Piano Adventure series. This series is simple, filled with music theory, and keeps the young student motivated. For beginning flute students, I use the Trevor Wye flute instruction books, along with the curriculum that is being taught in the student's band class at school. As students advance, the next level books are taught, along with solo repertoire for recitals and other performances. For flute students, we often work on music that the student needs to learn for UIL contests.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music; a student who practices and looks forward to coming to music lessons is a joy to teach. Each student must progress at his or her own pace; therefore realistic goals must be set at each lesson. Rewarding students for reaching practice goals makes students eager to learn more, and seeing how far they have progressed makes student's proud of their accomplishments. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
