Overview:
I'm a pianist and singer-songwriter who wants to inspire others and share my excitement and love of music! At an early age, I joined the church choir and now sing and play the keys for my local church worship team. I started classical lessons at the early age of 7 and continued learning through school and actively performing throughout Arizona and Washington state. I specialize in improvisation, song-writing and harmonization. I teach rhythm and chords first before even getting into the method type books (which I do find equally important). I've had the opportunity to open for a Grammy nominated artist, tour with a sponsored band and sing alongside some of the best artists in Arizona. I recently moved back to my hometown in Washington state so if you're looking for a piano teacher who can also teach you how to sing, I'm your person!
EXPERIENCE
I taught at a local school in Arizona and prepared my kids for performances every quarter. I focused on rhythm, pitch, harmonization, songwriting and stage presence. My experience stems from accompanying bands and choirs along with actively performing throughout the community. I’ve always had an active part in creating harmonies for bands and worship teams throughout my career. I love playing the solo piano at home but I find that most students aspire to play in a band or play alongside singing; that’s where I come in. I can teach students how to play in a band setting or as a solo artist who wants to sing and play the piano as an artist.
METHODS USED
My method involves keeping the kids engaged and inspired. Music itself is an entirely different language. We learned how to talk without books, so I think it’s equally important to teach at the beginning without books. We'll learn the basics first one step at a time. Once the student becomes familiar with the basic fundamentals of the piano, we’ll introduce the books and get deeper into theory alongside learning some songs that the student is interested in playing. If you’re interested in a classical approach, I personally recommend the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures method but I can also teach a more modernized approach with the focus on learning chords on music charts.
LESSON STYLE
It’s important that expectations are set at the very beginning. I like to have fun with my students but I also keep them accountable. I set realistic practice goals and SMART goals towards bigger quarterly goals whether that’s a recital or a YouTube video for online students. I think it’s super important to reward students for accomplishments and I am a strong believer in that all students are motivated and inspired differently. It’s my job to find out their motivation and cater to that. I have over 5+ years experience as an Academic Counselor so it's natural for me to find their motivation and help them succeed.
