Overview:
My Name is Taylor Clay, and I am a passionate and driven performer and educator who loves working with students and inspiring them to reach their full potential. In 2012, I graduated from the Crane School of Music in New York with a Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone Performance. During that time I studied classical, jazz and latin music. I have also had the opportunity to study and perform with world renound artists such as Eric Alexander, Wynton Marsalis, Lenny Pickett, Christopher Creviston and Donny McCaslin. In 2012 I was accepted into the Jazz Studies department at the University of Northern Colorado as a Graduate Assistant. This provided me with numerous hands on teaching experiences with big bands and small group combos. Since completing my masters, I have spent my time playing professionally with bands such as Funkiphino and other jazz groups in the Denver area.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to when I was an undergraduate. I began giving private lessons to younger college and high school students. Since then I have consistently taught students privatly either at my studio, at their home, or at a school. While obtaining my Masters degree at the University of Northern Colorado I was a teaching assistant and got hands on teaching experience with big bands and small jazz combos. I offer lessons on Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet. I encourage my students to practice on a consistant schedule in order to support good healthy habits and to gain a passion for the instrument. I also aim to guide my instruction based on the interests of the students. Music is fun, and my goal is to give each student the tools, knowledge and inspiration to explore the wonderful world of music.
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I start with Rubank's Elementary Method book. This will provide the student with the basic fundementals. I will then introduce the student to a variety of solo repertoire for his or her instrument. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible so the child grows up with music as a fun, artistic outlet. For students who already have knowledge on their instrument or who are adults, I aim to find what the student is interested in, and adjust my instruction accordingly. Regardless of age or ability level, I keep the lessons engaging and fun! Music is an art and discipline that betters us in every aspect of life.
LESSON STYLE
Watching a student develop a passion for music is a very rewarding feeling. Thats why I feel it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. Everyone learns at different paces and in different ways. I set achievable goals for each lessons, and use enthusiasm and positivity as my catalysts. By finding out what inspires the student, I can adjust my lessons accordingly to their wants and needs. I use many different tools in my teaching process depending on the lesson, such as playing along to recordings, using other instruments to demonstrate musical concepts, metronomes and tuners.
