I am passionate about helping people understand, appreciate and utilize music to enhance their life. I can personally attest that music has been important to me. It has helped me with concentration, discipline and overall life performance. With over 30 years of music experience, I have helped numerous men and woman become performers, composers and teachers of music. As a trained pianist, I have helped numerous musicians integrate theory into practice. I look forward to helping you to enjoy the marvelous gift of music and everything it brings to your life.
My teaching experience is varied and far reaching. I have been teaching since my youth as I worked in various churches and musical productions. I was often tasked to compose and then work with the singer's musicians in the production. From there I worked with organizations while in college assisting underserved individuals learn music as a means of escapism. Additionally, I have worked with music schools to assist prodigious students develop musical maturity. I currently work with choirs, bands, and individuals.
My teaching method begins with fundamentals. First, I teach about the piano itself. Second, I teach the notes. Third, I teach tones and steps. Fourth, I teach about major and minor scales. After I lay that foundation for the student I continue with theory and note identification. The student is ready to take off from there. I usually at this point let them select a song to play as well as I assign music. By them selecting music it informs me of their preferred genre. Students tend to perform better in their preferred genre
My teaching style is instruction, encouragement and assignment. I will teach a concept and then encourage the student as they attempt to master the skill. I will then assign that concept and skill as homework. After the student masters that concept I will introduce another concept that builds upon the previous one. During each quarter of the year a piece of music is assigned where those concepts are necessary to perform the piece. After each recital we assess the performance and improve upon the areas that need work.
Terence is a tremendously gifted and nuanced teacher. He has worked with my children for years both in person and remotely. Terence will tune the lessons to suit the learning style of each person. I have been awed by the development of technique and my kids are thrilled to deliver "recitals" to their family.
