Degree in Piano Pedagogy

Richardson Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year Award - 2010

President of Richardson Music Teachers Association 2008 and 2009

Overview:

I love working with children and helping them discover the piano and the joy of playing music. I graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy and have been teaching ever since. I am an active member of the Richardson Music Teachers Association, which affords many musical opportunities for my students. My students participate in several festivals through RMTA throughout the year, and also participate in the state theory exam, if desired. I also accompany all over the metroplex for band, choir, and orchestra, and I love collaborating with students of all ages.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for over 30 years, and I love working with children. Regular practice is important so that students can see progress and reap the rewards that come with it. I meet the students where they are at, trying to work with their particular style of learning. My lessons are based in classical music, but we learn many different styles of music as they progress. The teaching association I belong to has four festivals a year, which I encourage my students to participate in, where they perform pieces and receive constructive feedback, helping them to grow as musicians and to become comfortable playing for others. I also teach music theory, which helps them gain a better understanding of how music works as a whole. I also use fun learning games on an iPad for reinforcement of certain concepts. The more they enjoy lessons, they more they learn!

METHODS USED

For beginning students, I usually start with the Faber Piano Adventures series. We also work on long-term pieces for festivals and recitals throughout the year if they are interested in playing for those. I strongly encourage them to participate in these, helping them to feel confident and secure in these performances. I will also pull in pieces from other methods or books when needed to fill in any gaps or work with any different learning styles. For students who already have some experience with piano, I find where they are at and choose an appropriate method or music to match their current level.

LESSON STYLE

I move at whatever pace is appropriate for the particular student. We set long-term goals so they have something they are working towards and are rewarded for hard work. Learning how to play the piano is about so much more than just the piano! The benefits reach far beyond music, helping them with school, self-confidence, and many other aspects in their everyday life. Although we do follow a method book for at least the first few years, we add additional solo music, and I let them choose from several level-appropriate pieces so that they are enjoying what they are learning.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
