Hello! I'm a passionate and motivated instructor that loves to teach students and various styles of music. I graduate from Bethune-Cookman University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and in 2010 with a Master of Music degree in Music Performance from Georgia State University. The knowledge and experience I've gained throughout my educational experience has afforded me to perform on various projects including a a Cadillac commercial for the Super Bowl in 2005 and an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
My teaching experience began back when I was a junior in college. I started working with 2 high schools in the Daytona Beach area in the marching arts as well as private lessons. Upon moving back home in the metro Atlanta area after graduating, I began doing various clinics for high schools in the Dekalb and Fulton county areas in preparation for the schools spring concert band festival. From 2011 to 2016 I taught percussion at Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College. Over the years, I've taught students at all ages and playing levels.
For beginning students, I start with getting comfortable holding the drum sticks and understanding how to properly strike the drumhead. Students will be introduced to basic notes and rhythms that will help them along the way. Beginning students start on drum pads and progressively move towards actual drums. For students that are in band at their school, I can reinforce what is being taught by their band director and give extra guidance. Students that want to learn drum set, I try to find out which genre of music they are interested in and center our lessons around that genre.
My teaching style consist of setting realistic goals and encouraging students to push past what they think their limitations are. Getting my students to understand that this journey is a marathon and not a race is important so that they can understand how they should pace themselves as they progress. Offering my students a chance of performing in front of an audience through recitals, gives them motivation to continue to strive to be a better player and allows them to see the fruits of their labor.
