Overview:
I am a professional musician and teacher who is passionate about helping students meet their full potenial. I studied voice, flute, and piano at Bridgewater State University. I am an active musician in the south shore and the greater Boston area. Weekly I serve as a professional section leader and cantor at a local church. Some of my favorite roles that I have played in musical theater are April - Company, The balladeer - Assassins, and Adolfo Pireli - Sweeney Todd. I love music of all genres including classical, musical theater, pop, rock, folk, and even punk.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in college; I would often tutor and help other students with difficult course material. I realized that I loved helping others learn and I began teaching at local music stores and schools a few years ago. I strongly feel that learning is best done in a fun, supportive environment. Every year I host recitals to give my students an opportunity to perform in additional to helping students prepare for local auditions, open mics, and other performances. Out of all the experience levels I teach, I love to teach beginners the most; it is very rewarding to watch them grow!
METHODS USED
For my voice students I prefer to work within genres that the student likes; I did not like being forced to sing certain songs when I was studying voice, so I would not want to do that to anyone else! My flute students I like to work with the Rubank method books - from beginner to advanced; they offer the most comprehensive approach to playing the flute. For piano students, I prefer to use the Piano Adventure Series by Faber. My younger students will start with the Primer level and my students 12 and up typically start with the Adult Book 1 of the series. In addition to working with lesson books and repertoire, students will also learn music theory and ear training in a fun way as we progress through lessons.
LESSON STYLE
It is very important to me that regardless of instrument, the student learns healthy and sustainable techniques that will last a lifetime. I also foster independent student thought in lessons; it is a real joy to me when students not only progress musically, but as an artist as well. If they can understand music on their own without constant instruction or correction; I know I have done my job. A student that can self-diagnose their faults in music is on their way to being a musician themselves!
