Bachelor Degree: Cal State Long Beach

Overview:

I am Theodore, a dedicated cellist, musician, and educator based in Los Angeles. My passion for music has been a lifelong journey, and I am excited to share my expertise with students of all levels. My musical journey began at the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), where I had the privilege of serving as the principal cellist in the school's orchestra, chamber music ensemble, and opera and musical theater orchestras. These formative years instilled in me a deep appreciation for classical music and a commitment to excellence in performance. Currently, I am furthering my musical education at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where I have the incredible opportunity to study under the guidance of David Garrett, a prominent member of the LA Philharmonic. This mentorship has enriched my musical skills and deepened my understanding of the cello's expressive capabilities. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have been an active member of various performance groups and summer festivals. I have had the honor of performing with the LA Phil's Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) at Torres, the YOLA Cross-site Orchestra, and the Olympia Youth Orchestra. These experiences have allowed me to collaborate with talented musicians and showcase my skills on prestigious stages. I am also committed to fostering intergenerational connections through music. I currently participate in the HOLA Eisner Intergenerational Orchestra, bridging the gap between generations through the power of music. Furthermore, my involvement in Los Angeles Opera's "On Gold Mountain" production showcased my versatility as a cellist. My dedication to music extends beyond performance. I am deeply passionate about music education and its impact on mental health. I am the founder of "Mindclef," an initiative that focuses on promoting mental well-being among classical musicians. While "Mindclef" is not officially a non-profit, its mission is to provide support and resources to musicians facing mental health challenges. As an educator, I am committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians. My teaching studio is a place of creativity and growth, where students of all ages and skill levels can explore the beauty of the cello and music therapy. I believe in tailoring lessons to the individual needs and goals of each student, fostering a supportive and inspiring learning environment. In the future, I aspire to further my academic journey by pursuing a Ph.D. at Northwestern University. This will enable me to deepen my expertise in music therapy, combining my passion for music with my commitment to mental health advocacy. Thank you for considering me as your cello instructor. I look forward to embarking on this musical journey with you, whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician. Together, we can explore the world of music, one note at a time.

EXPERIENCE

Teaching is not just a profession for me; it's a passion that I've had the privilege to pursue through meaningful organizations like the Saturday Conservatory of Music and Through The Staff. At the Saturday Conservatory of Music in San Gabriel, I've had the incredible opportunity to share my love for music with the children of the greater Los Angeles area. This non-profit organization is dedicated to providing quality music education to young minds aged 6 through 20. Our mission is to make music accessible, and we achieve this by offering low-cost small group lessons, theory classes, and ensemble experiences. As a teacher at the Saturday Conservatory of Music, I take pride in delivering rigorous instruction that goes beyond technical skills. It's about nurturing creativity, instilling self-discipline, and fostering a lifelong love for music. Seeing the growth and enthusiasm of these young musicians is truly rewarding. Through The Staff is another remarkable organization that I'm involved with. This 501(c)(3) non-profit is dedicated to connecting 2nd-12th grade students with volunteer university musicians from across the country. Our goal is to break down barriers and make music education accessible to any student who wants to learn, regardless of their geographical location or financial constraints. Through free virtual private lessons and essential music education materials, we are making musical journeys possible for students who might not otherwise have had the opportunity. It's about leveling the playing field and ensuring that every young person, no matter their circumstances, can experience the joy and enrichment that music brings. Teaching through these organizations has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for me. It allows me to give back to the community, share my knowledge and passion for music, and witness the transformative power of education in the lives of these talented students. Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge; it's about nurturing potential and inspiring the next generation of musicians.

METHODS USED

As a music educator, my teaching methods are designed to ignite and nurture a deep passion for music in all its diverse forms. I firmly believe in the power of integrating students' personal musical interests with classical training to create a well-rounded and enjoyable learning experience. My approach is rooted in customization. I understand that each student has unique tastes and musical preferences, and I use this as a foundation for their musical journey. Whether it's introducing jazz scales, weaving in a pop tune, or exploring various genres, I aim to make each lesson engaging and relatable to the individual student. One of my primary goals as a teacher is to select pieces that resonate with the student's musical preferences while simultaneously challenging and enhancing their classical skills. This approach not only keeps students motivated but also ensures they develop a broad musical vocabulary and appreciation for different styles. Additionally, my double major in psychology plays a crucial role in my teaching philosophy. I believe it's essential to support students in their classical music training in healthy and efficient ways. By understanding the psychological aspects of learning and performance, I can tailor my teaching methods to address the unique needs and challenges that each student may face. This holistic approach not only fosters musical growth but also promotes mental well-being throughout their musical journey. In essence, my teaching methods are a harmonious blend of classical training and individualized, student-centered learning. I aspire to instill a lifelong love for music while equipping my students with the skills and mindset to excel in their musical endeavors, all within a supportive and nurturing educational environment.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching style is centered around a profound belief that goes beyond simply instructing students to play their instruments. It's about nurturing a lifelong love for music itself and ensuring that music becomes a source of enrichment that enhances their lives forever. While I recognize that not all of my students aspire to become professional musicians, I am passionate about instilling a deep appreciation for music that transcends their time in my studio. My approach is holistic, focusing on the emotional and psychological aspects of music as much as the technical. One of the key aspects of my teaching style is the use of healthy teaching mechanisms, drawing inspiration from therapeutic practices. I understand that every student is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and goals. Therefore, I strive to create a safe and nurturing learning environment where students feel empowered and enriched, rather than overwhelmed. I push my students gently, always mindful of their individual boundaries and comfort levels. It's essential that they feel supported and encouraged, which fosters a positive and long-lasting relationship with music. By incorporating therapeutic approaches, I ensure that my teaching is a source of inspiration and personal growth, not just a means to an end. In essence, my teaching style is a harmonious blend of musical instruction and emotional well-being. My goal is to help students not only become proficient musicians but also to discover the profound joy and enrichment that music can bring to their lives, creating a lasting connection to this beautiful art form.
