Current MBA Candidate, University of Alabama BS Civil Engineering, University of Alabama
Overview:
Hello! My name is Tate and I'm currently an MBA candidate at the University of Alabama. I graduated from UA with a BS in civil engineering last May. I currently play rhythm guitar for the Tuscaloosa rock band MURPH outside of my class work. I've been playing guitar for over 12 years and recently decided to start teaching lessons to share some of the insights I've gained in that time. I have a background in a wide variety of music including rock, blues, funk, metal, and some country. I look forward to working with you!
EXPERIENCE
This is my first experience teaching guitar, but I've had plenty of experience (12+ years) with tutors, band directors, and fellow musicians to have a feel for what "works." I believe in approaching students with an individualized approach, tailoring methods and exercises for different pupils. I've had experience teaching outside of music through camp counseling and University of Alabama outreach programs. I have a passion for education and believe it is equally beneficial for both tutor and pupil. I'll be learning songs as students request to learn them, so this is an enlightening and enjoyable project for me. The learning process never stops! This is why I've decided to teach.
METHODS USED
I'm brand new to teaching guitar, so my methods are somewhat flexible with regards to student needs. I have experience both with written music and tabs, so student preference will determine which route to take. I've always found lessons to be more effective when instructors utilized the song method; to me, introducing elements of theory through this method makes the information "stickier." I hope students come away from each lesson motivated to practice and improve; ultimately, a student takes away what he or she puts in. Most importantly, though, students need to be having fun! Guitar is a lifelong, rewarding activity which should be undertaken at a comfortable pace.
LESSON STYLE
My education background is in civil engineering, so tend to be a hands-on, problem solving teacher. If a student has a weakness, I tend to focus on correcting the problem point and focus before moving on. I believe in consistent practice which fits within the confines of one's schedule. I believe a basic understanding of musical theory is important, but I tend to keep these sorts of ideas as practical as possible based on a student's ambitions with the guitar. Playing guitar is fun, so I keep things light.
