2019 Lebanon High School Best Male Vocalist
I am Thomas S., I am a vocalist who has been training for now 8 years of my life. I am set to graduate in Spring 2024 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with a couple of extra vocal classes under my belt. I have performed in multiple ensembles, in many musicals and plays, and have performed many times solo. I performed for the St Mary's Church in Lebanon on 8th and Cumberland as a solo singer and quartet vocalist. I plan to pursue being a full-time choir instructor and possibly musical director once I graduate!
My teaching experience rests in observations and with my peers. I have taught multiple classes and sectionals on my own in my now 4 year college career both in ensembles and in my host schools. I have taught a lesson on Music Theory, going over some core concepts that can be found there, I have taught 3rd grade students songs in a general music classroom, I have led a lesson there as well, making sure that each student stays focused on the task before them, and I have lead sectionals for Concert and Chamber Choir here at Lebanon Valley College. Obviously I have little training one on one, but I am looking forward to you giving me a chance!
For students who are starting off, no matter their age, I will first test their range so that I know what I am working with and then I will test how well they can match pitch. If they struggle with matching pitch I will then run exercises with them where we will start going over solfege in simple patterns so that they can start developing their voice and an understanding of pitches and a scale. Once we have a full understanding of the scale, I will start introducing some simple pieces to them as well as some easy duets to try and develop their independence as a vocalist. We can then move on to developing their independence even further by giving accompanying them separately, introducing some solo repertoire slowly.
I want to make sure my students are comfortable with what they are doing even when they are outside of their comfort zone. There is such a thing as too far so pushing them outside their limit is unhelpful in a private lesson. I want the student to feel excited and accomplished in what they are doing because everyone's musical journey is different, even if students are starting from the same skill level they will have different things they have to work on to become better musicians. My students will want to accomplish the goals they set for themselves and I will try to help them as much as possible while also giving them other goals to strive for along the way. Every student that wants to be a classical musician should try some musical theatre and every student that wants to be a jazz musician should try some classical.
