I have a great passion for teaching. I enjoy sharing my knowledge, and experience of music with everyone. I graduated from Rollins College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Percussion Performance in 2013. I am interested in all styles of music and I encourage my students to have an open mind; to make them well rounded musicians. I have had the privelage to perform with the Bach Festival Orchestra of Winter Park at their 75th anniversary concert. As well as a with the Bach Festival Youth Choir as a guest musician. I have also played in several clubs, and venues in the Orlando Area.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching at a music enrichment program for elementary school children. I enjoyed this experience because it taught me how to work with younger children. And I have found that by teaching younger students, they are very eager to learn. During my last two years of college I began private teaching at a local high school. I currently teach privatley in students homes as well as in my home studio.
METHODS USED
My approach to teaching is individualistic. I try to accomodate the students interests in the most effective way possible. The fundamental books and methods that I teach to all my students are: Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone, and Syncopation by Ted Reed. These two books are absolutely essential to understanding the basic technique and fundamentals of drumming. For beginning students who are young children, I typically start with simple counting and clapping rhythms, and very simple technique excersises then progress from their. For older children and adults I start with the two books mentioned, as well as learning to read and count rhythms as well as basic music theory knowledge. I then progress to learning the fundamnetal grooves of Rock, Swing, and other styles, just to introduce the student to a variety of vocabulary on the drumset. All the while I will encourage the student to lead me towards his/her interests. After all it is the STUDENTS lesson.
LESSON STYLE
I am very enthusiastic about teaching. I try to make the experience for my students as rewarding for them as possible. It is such a wonderful thing when students develop a passion for music. I strongly encourage them to pursue their interests. My teaching style is methodical but very practical. I believe it is crucial that each student progresses at their own pace. I like to set realistic short term goals for my students. This makes the students eager to learn more and progress further on their musical journey. I help them realize their strengths and weaknesses, bringing both out in a positivie and encouraging light. I try to find what their interests are so I can shape each lesson to fulfill their musical desires.
