Overview:
I am a dedicatd and passionate performer and instructor. I think it is imperative that a teacher stay engaged as a performer in order to offer the most relevant information to their students. I hold a Master of Music degree from Boston university and have held positions with six different professional orchestras in New England and two in Florida in addition to serving as Artistic Director and clarinetist with the New England Chamber Players. I have performed all across North America including New York, Boston, Ocala (FL), Monterey (CA), and Quebec.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching students for about twelve years. I held graduate teaching assistantships at the University of Florida, Boston University and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. In addition, I woas a contracted instructor at a private K-6 school in Chestnut Hill, MA. My students have won auditions and competitions at both the professional and collegiate levels. While I am passionate and very serious about the art, I also feel it is important to enjoy playing and studying music. In this light, I try to keep lessons interesting and fun.
METHODS USED
I am very flexible when it comes to method books. I try and work with any materials that may be required by the student's school. For older students, I tend to use standard method books such as Rose, Klose, Polatscheck, Baerman and a few others based on the student's needs. I also have many exercises that dont require books. I often play in lessons or bring recordings to offer an example. Also, I use visual aids and various "gizmos" to help visualize the intangible elements of playing the clarinet. For more advanced students, I like to teach reed adjustment to help achieve consistant results.
LESSON STYLE
I am very flexible in my approach. I understand that there are many way to achieve the desired result. I am always available to answer questions and welcome them. I am not doctrinaire in my approach. Each student is unique in their strengths and areas which need more attention and I strive to meet these needs on the individual level. I enjoy working with enthusiastic students, regardless of level. I find listening to recordings and live performances to be an invaluable part of the learning process and try to include this whenever possible.
