ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
East Stroudsburg University, BFA. Marywood University, Music Education. Trained amongst numerous celebrated musicans in the East Stroudsburg/Delaware Water Gap area such as Nancy and Spencer Reed, Paul Rosstoack, and Chris London. While growing up, I was surrounded by well respected musicans such as GE Smith- who used to practice with members of my family, Bob Dorough, and Steve Gilmore.
Awards:
Of my qualities as a teacher I am most proud of, my ability to transfer the appreciation of music and playing to my students. In my career, I directed several successful choral concerts and summer music camps at schools in PA and New Jersey. Also, I am proud to have taught multiple members of the internationally touring band The Sleepy Mountain Banjo Boys.
Overview:
Music has always been a passion of mine. Most of what I know to do is performing and creating music. I find it rewarding to share and work with my students to instill that same appreciation for music. Upon graduation from East Stroudsburg University, I received a degree in Fine Arts. My main instrument of study in school was classical guitar. After graduation I became inspired to devote my life to teaching. After having been given the opportunity to teach private guitar lessons in a local studio I have been teaching ever since, a total of over 35 years experience. I have performed in several bands as a lead guitar, bass guitar and mandolin. My wife and son, and I have recently moved to the Dover/York Pa. area and I am looking for new students. I live on a farm in Dover, Pa. and have set up my studio here on our historic 18th century property.
EXPERIENCE
My experience begins immediately out of college. I gave private music lessons for many years. Soon I began concentrating on playing at the professional level in the Pocono Mountains where I lived. I was in several successful bands with Mickey Day, John Murphy, Spencer Reed, and Ed Ludwig along with others. I returned to teaching when I found a studio in Hackettstown, New Jersey to continue giving private lessons. I gave lessons there for approximately 20 years. I was then given a chance to teach music at a pubic school in Stanhope, New Jersey and taught at a private charter school in the Pocono Mountains. Currently, I have been teaching private lessons in homes in New Jersey. It is from here that I've been teaching students going back 10 years, from them to their brothers and sisters.
METHODS USED
I encourage my students to experience all styles of music, classical, pop, blues, country, rock etc. so they can create their own music. I teach students to sight read their music. For beginning students I require a guitar methods book. Young students like to accomplish finishing books and I find this is a useful means to measure accomplishment. It is important to me that my student learn the basic fundamentals and after they have grasped the concept and proved and understanding I introduce them to different styles to using the guitar pick. Students then have the opportunity to make choices. I focus on what the adult has in mind for their goals and what they want to learn and take it from there.
LESSON STYLE
Individuality is of the utmost importance to me as a teacher. No two students learn the same or are instructed the same by me as a teacher. All factors are taken into consideration when I teach. As a teacher I challenge each students encouraging them to take on assignments that they can reach their goals and find some self-expression and self-discovery in doing so. I practice a laid back style of teaching, I am very understanding and kind, my students respond well to my personality and my psychology background is a plus in dealing with students.

Thom has given my son lessons for both bass and guitar for over two years. His ability both on his instruments and teaching them, as well as his incredibly versatile styles, makes it possible to excel at any genre. Thom is one of the most patient, amicable, and encouraging people I have met, and I would highly recommend him to build your skills in every metric as a guitar player.

Tom has been teaching our son mandolin for approximately two years. He is an excellent, talented, enthusiastic, and patient teacher. He gently challenges our son while encouraging. He always lets my son taste success before ending his lesson. I especially enjoy that Tom plays duets with my son. Tom is reliable, he came highly recommended and I couldn't agree more!

Tom has taught three of my children on banjo, guitar and mandolin. We have had him as a teacher for almost 10 years! His musical ability with stringed instruments is excellent. What makes him a great teacher though, for young and old alike, is his ability to patiently encourage and challenge the kids; all the while making it a fun experience for them. Tom is a reliable, talented teacher and I highly recommend him.

I had my son take lessons from Thom and he played Stairway to Heaven at his 6th grade talent show, perfect, note for note on a double neck guitar. I know that so many people were impressed by his ability teach children that he got many new students from this presentation.
