My name is Thomas S. and I teach voice lessons! In our lessons we will focus on vocal technique, practice development, performance preparation, language diction, and repertoire interpretation. All lessons will be held virtually. A little bit about myself: I discovered my passion for music and performance pretty early in life. I dedicated my educational experience to becoming the best musician I can be. Music has brought me all over the world with opporunties to perform in main stage productions as well as teach and coach singers of all ages. Fitness and health is another passion of mine. I believe that it is important to take care of your body and mind because not only does this contribute to your mood and health, it can actually effect your performance and vocal abilities. I hold a Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Institute of Music at the Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Music from Mannes School of Music at The New School.
I began teaching and leading my peers back in high school when I was a section leader for my choir. I helped teach melodies, rhythms and harmony to those that had difficulty grasping the material. After I graduated high school l attended conservatory where I developed my musicianship skills and confidence to teach privately. Additionally, Peabody has a fantastic preparatory school for young interested musicians. I had the wonderful opportunity to teach lessons and develop my own pedagogical skills there. Toward the end of college I had an incredible opportunity to travel to Haiti to teach music at The Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince. There I taught voice lessons 1-on-1 and even conducted their mens choir. I have since been invited back several years in a row to teach and coach singers of all ages.
With every new student I will take the time to learn what your goals and desires are. We will discuss your current vocal practices and repertoire. Typically I like to spend the beginning of our lessons vocalizing and warming up the voice. Vocalizing will be allow me to hear your current abilities and range, allowing me to accurately judged where your voice lies and how to move forward. I offer 45-minute and 60-minute lessons. Below is a sample lesson plan. 0:00 - 10:00 Various vocal and physical warm ups 10:00 - 20:00 Vocal Technique work 20:00 - 40:00 Repetoire run-through 40:00 - 50:00 Language Diction 50:00 - 60:00 Next steps, weekly practice preparation for next lesson.
There is nothing more rewarding than watching my students overcome challenges, learn new concepts, and master their own voice! Everybody’s voice and body develops at different times and as a result, progress will happen at their own pace. I will encourage my students to grow and develop their skills by setting realistic goals and challenging them appropriately. It is important to me that our lessons be a two way street. I need to learn what inspires them and what they want to accomplish with these lessons so I can in turn provide the best lesson possible.
