BS in Music, Dixie State University, Piano Performance AA, Dixie State College, Music
I love working with students, and I have a lot of experience. I have a degree in Piano Performance from Dixie State University. My talent on the piano has given me numerous possibilities to perform, including soloing with the Southwest Symphony. I've also composed music, and won multiple music awards.
I began teaching piano eight years ago, and have been teaching ever since then. I urge students to practice regularly. My students learn classical music, but also venture out to some pop once they reach the intermediate level. I do my best to create a fun learning environment, while still being a strict enough teacher to push them. I like to encourage students to memorize and perform music, for that can bring some of the greatest joy in one's musical journey. I welcome students of all backgrounds!
I use various methods depending on the age and personality of a student. Methods that I use most are Bastien, Schaum, and Agay. I am able to teach out of nearly any method, and sometimes use a combination of different ones. I focus on technic by doing five finger patterns, scales, chords, and arpeggios, each of which are introduced individually once the student reaches certain abilities. For older and advanced intermediate students, I take more input on what pieces they like and construct lessons based on those.
To me, the most important thing a student can gain from piano lessons is a love for music. I know each individual progresses at different speeds, and I try to be realistic about what they can do with their present abilities. I am big on positive feedback, for I feel most people learn better with a greater amount of compliments than criticism. I do use constructive criticism, but first I always give an uplifting comment. I am also able to adapt very well to different personalities, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.
