Hello all! I'm a welcoming piano teacher ready to spark passion for music in young pianists! I am currently studying Music Education in piano at the University of Delaware. I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old, and it's been a journey of learning new things everyday since then! I have experience playing contemporary piano on worship teams in churches, playing classical music for recitals, and entering a concerto competition. I also have a passion for music production, and have experience using GarageBand and Logic Pro.
I have been teaching piano for a year so far and it has been one of the highlights of my musical life. I love to find innovative and fun ways to make music theory and technique easier to understand for young minds. My #1 goal as a teacher is help students grow a passion for music, and equip them with tools to use for a future of music-making and music-enjoying. Another point of importance for me as a teacher is emphasizing the many ways/paths to learn and appreciate music, and introducing different styles of music-making at a young age (reading sheet music, learning music by ear, improvisation, producing music).
My general course of action for students is to teach the essentials through the Faber book series. As well as learn songs and do theory/aural exercises from the Faber books, I like to use online music theory games for my students to practice skills like note identification. I also like to assign students songs outside from the Faber books that they know and love, to further fuel their passion for learning piano! Besides teaching students to read sheet music through the books, I also know how to teach students to read lead/chord sheets and play by ear. I also have the skills to teach older students the basics of music production if they are interested.
I believe in the importance of a relaxing environment and allowing my students to know their self-worth from a young age. I want to be encouraging and emphasize that mistakes are welcome to help us learn. As a person who struggles with performance anxiousness, I understand what it's like to balance emotional wellbeing and being a musician; I want to make it clear to my students that they don't perform to achieve perfection, rather to express themselves through music and share what they love with others.
