I love to see others excel in their unique gifts! I began piano as a little boy, but was discouraged from music lessons due to the teaching program. As I became older, I went from recorder, to saxophones, to improvisation, to piano, to singing, to flute, to basic wind instruments, eventually playing/composing/recording/touring with several of the most well-known of bands in the Southeastern Wisconsin area on vocals, saxophones, flute, and piano, as well as studying music at Carroll College. I currently pastor the arts at a local ministry and minister evangelistically in several outlets, especially on vocals/saxophones/piano.
I began teaching in 2000, and since then have taught saxophones, flute, clarinet, improvisation, chord theory, piano / keyboard, basic music understanding to young children in a classroom setting, and coached worship teams and group seminars to all ages. It is a great joy to see students excel and expand as they take what they have learned into their own lives! Without focus on achieving this, I have witnessed most of my school-aged students advance to lead positions in the ensembles they are involved with, as well as continuing with a passion in their gifts!
Lessons are catered to each individual student. The lessons are set up to maintain a balance between fun (to keep them encouraged) and necessary exercises to build the foundations that will excel them to the next level. Such methods will include basic music understanding such as posture/finger positions, reading music, ear training, improvisation, finger-memory exercises, etc., where they will both purposefully learn techniques and unknowingly develop very important musical faculties. I will also find the appropriate opportunities, as the student is willing, so that they may use their talents in opportunities such as showcases, gigs, school-related programs, church, etc.
It is a great joy to see students learn, grow, and have fun! I begin by asking the student of their goals, and eventually help them develop new goals as they explore and find their unique gifts. Students are provided with a unique, well-rounded program tailored for them, including the foundational resources and understanding needed to fly with other musicians. Each student will find that I am looking into their musical interests and strong points as an outlet to keep the lessons personal and relevant, including compositions written just for them, while continuously stretching them to the next step as they advance to their vision.
