Overview:
I've performed in bands on stage since the age of 16, and have written music for several bands, often as the primary singer, songwriter and front man. Presently I play bass in the death metal band Heretical Sect, who have been featured in Decibel magazine, but my interests in music lie within a spectrum of folk, classical, metal and rock. As a teacher and tutor I engage my students on their level, and find goals within their reach to keep them amped and eager to learn in a multifaceted context of composition, technical skill and performance. 
EXPERIENCE
I started working with youth as a counselor when I was 15 years old, which soon transitioned to helping students in my high school band integrate concepts and theory that seem at first like a foreign language. During college, as a student majoring in Chinese, I continued to teach guitar lessons during my stays in China. My work as a tutor continued through my A.A. at Laney College, and through this experience I have fine tuned my perception of my student's strengths and and areas of need.
METHODS USED

I approach music from four perspectives in order to create an integrated foundation that caters to the learning methods of my students. My method is very simple: First and foremost I ask what kind of music my students like to listen to. Using this as a format I gradually add theoretical concepts to the extent the student is able to broaden his or her understanding of what they like. Third, I incorporate short bursts of technical exercices, utilizing a knowledge of the devolopment of muscle memory and gauging my student's individual capacity to absorb new information. Lastly, I keep records of a student's interests and progress and prepare for each lesson by putting myself in their shoes and acting as the student myself. 

LESSON STYLE

I am by nature a service oriented individual, and a kid at heart. Teaching music is a very important aspect of my life - I believe in its power as a tool the build confidence, broaden a healthy emotional spectrum, and communicate with others. My patience allows me to work with my student's at their pace and to encourage them gently. I grew up with a few impatient music teachers and I am proud to have what I believe is a healthier approach to a practice that is at it's root a joyous pursuit.
