Overview:
I'm committed to helping students access their musicality within. I've been turning students' passions into performance abilities for several years. I have a Bachelor's of Music for Jazz Piano Performance from University of North Texas '10, and a Master's of Music for Jazz Piano Performance at the Manhattan School of Music '13. I have had the opportunity to perform with some of my musical heroes in various contexts, sharing musical moments with artists such as Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, John Abercrombie, Ambrose Akinmusire, Taylor Eigsti, Dayna Stephens, and many others. I have had the opportunity to perform around New York and the Bay Area, CA with my own group, employing colleagues of the finest caliber.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching piano since I first graduated with a Bachelor's. Starting in my Hometown of Palo Alto, CA, I moved to New York in 2011, and have since been teaching a growing roster of students. The important part of the musical process, is learning how to be a self-teacher. I give students some methods to practice and encourage them to find the motivation within that allows the to keep with their studies. It's no easy task, and I am greatly encouraged by my students' efforts. Music is a passion that grows with more time spent in study.
METHODS USED
For young students, we pick beginning repertoire to use based on the kid's and parents' interests. As we explore the interests of the student within our initial framework, I continue to make suggestions as to where we may have the best success. For adults, I teach based on the interests of the student; however, I also encourage a jazz and classical-based pursuit, as this will inform most other styles of music and strengthen the performance ability and musicality of the student. Developing passions is where I thrive-- I give students the tools, and work my hardest to instill inspiration into each lesson.
LESSON STYLE
I encourage every student to be the masters of their own musical development, first and foremost. I tend to treat every lesson as a consultation session, and we will get into the practice method that is appropriate for the student's given musical strengths and weaknesses. I guide them through some practice, and continue to give them next steps. I stress a commitment to a solid warmup routine. Like other pursuits, this routine is very crucial to the maintenance and development of ability. I also love giving my students lessons from time to time that a regular course wouldn't offer, especially when it comes to knowing what is of higher priority to learn, and when it comes to tools for the self-training that a student has to go through every week. I know that I take up only 1 hour of their time per week, and so I cheer them on towards a week filled with musical self-enrichment.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
