I love music, I love people, I love teaching music! I love sharing my passion for music and what I have learned over 25 years of playing and teaching private lessons. In 2002 I attained my Masters degree in saxophone performance from the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2004 I joined the Tiptons Sax Quartet and Drums and have been touring and performing internationally since. I have taught privately since 1996, I have taught in public and private schools as a woodwind coach and instructor in after school programs. Few things give me more joy than sharing time with my students, playing music, and helping them reach their goals. Life is short, lets make music. I currently teach via zoom.
My teaching experience started in college 27 years ago and I have maintained a consistent student roster since 2004. Encouraging a regular practice schedule is a key point especially for younger students in progressing and gaining a passion for the instrument. I've discovered offering a balance of classical, and modern music are the best combo for helping students maintain motivation to practice and learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I am not doing my job well. All students are encouraged to perform for friends, family and in public settings to feel good about their accomplishments and keep motivated to learn. I am always looking to bring on new students of all ages and abilities.
For beginning students I use the Essential Elements, or Standard of Excellence band methods. If a student is also involved in a school band program, I am happy to help them with school assignments. Once the student has gotten a handle of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce supplemental repertoire in line with students interest to further support and engage my students. Understanding the nuts and bolts of music theory is fundamental for a students progression and ease of learning their instrument. Reading and understanding rhythm in time is usually the most difficult facet in playing music. I designate isolated time during lessons as needed to strengthen rhythm comprehension and execution through counting and clapping exercises.
My main priority as a teacher is first to connect to the student as a person, and to create a friendship. I need to know what my students like and help them set goals. I like to identify a persons natural abilities and help them improve in the areas which need strengthening. I am here to encourage and provide material to learn that is engaging and challenging. I like to laugh with my students and to have a good time together. I like share the joy that comes in making music. As a professional musician I have learned how to learn, and how practice! I share tips and tricks on how to practice so my students reach their musical goals. Learning music is a complex process with several elements to digest. Breaking down the elements into bit size pieces making success possible for everyone.
I have been working with Tina for the past two years and it has just been the best! She is a very kind and thoughtful teacher and will make sure you understand everything in a fun and engaging manner. Every interaction is meaningful and fun. She constantly pushes me to be better and is with me every step of the way! Amazing teacher, would highly recommend for any skill level.
I have been taught by Tina during my four years in high school and I must say that it was one of the best decisions I could've made. I was looking to improve my skills as a saxophone player and I'm happy to have had an outlet every week. Tina was patient and friendly right from the beginning and is someone I consider a true friend. Our weekly meetings were something I looked forward too. Throughout high school I experienced a lot of stress and pressure from school, Tina was a great outlet to relieve some of this pressure. She would listen to my complaints while also being productive in teaching me. I appreciate her as a teacher and as a friend. Thank you Tina!
